Singing Mamas is a national not for profit to improve maternal wellbeing through group singing. We are a network of ordinary, extraordinary women of all ages and life stages, working to deliver evidence based singing for health across the UK and internationally. Group singing has been clinically proven to reduce anxiety and symptoms of postnatal depression and increase “happy hormones” such as serotonin, dopamine, endorphins and the bonding hormone oxytocin, lifting participants’ moods and creating community.

Josie is a trained singing for wellbeing practitioner and studied at Leeds College Of Music and believes passionately in the benefits of singing. Having lived experience of postnatal anxiety and depression, Josie experienced firsthand the difference her local Singing Mamas group made to her mental health, and this motivated her to train with Singing Mamas in order to ensure other mamas could experience the benefits of singing for wellbeing.
“Being in a room full of other women who were experiencing similar issues made such a difference to my mental state and the connection I felt through singing together was a lifeline. Babies and toddlers seemed to become calm when the singing started and I came away with new songs to sing to my baby and with my mood completely changed. I still sing the same songs now to my 4 year old! I was so inspired that I went on to train with Singing Mamas and became a singing for wellbeing practitioner so that more women can experience the positive effects of group singing”
Participant
The sessions at Womenzone will be open to all women, pregnant women and women with babies and toddlers up to 2 years old. We will start with some gentle movement and breathing, then some simple call and response songs and onto harmonies from around the world, all taught by ear with no lyrics to learn, no sheet music and absolutely no need for musical experience! Women will sit in a circle on chairs or cushions, with a mat and sensory toys for the babies in the middle and there is also a cafe and a creche available, though booking is essential.
These singing workshops are funded through the Holding Time project, with funding from Bradford Council and the Keith Howard Foundation. This initiative uses arts interventions for women and children as a driver of health, wellbeing and resilience.
About Holding Time
Holding Time is both a celebration of breastfeeding and an exploration of the challenges mothers experience in establishing and maintaining breastfeeding. These issues may be physical, mental, environmental or cultural barriers. Working collaboratively with partner organisations and local mothers, we aim to celebrate the diversity of breastfeeding whilst overturning stereotypes, challenging assumptions and encouraging greater understanding and awareness in the whole community about the value of breastfeeding and its benefits.
