Visual artist Lisa Creagh, Creative Lives and Kala Sangam Arts Centre invite you to a free live event as part of the Holding Time photography exhibition in the gallery.

Motherstalk will bring together mothers with service providers and past participants to talk about their mothering journeys, breastfeeding provision in Bradford and the ways an art project can bypass and improve mothers experiences within the city

This event accompanies  The Holding Time Project, a photography exhibition of breastfeeding portraits, currently on show at Kala Sangam Arts Centre .

In this 2 hour live event mothers will share stories of their birth and breastfeeding experiences, offering a fresh understanding of their journeys. The audience will be invited to listen and where possible, join in the conversation.

1.30pm: My Holding Time Project

Ellen and Ros from Liverpool/Coventry Holding Time projects talk about their journey to writing, their experiences of being interviewed and photographed for the project and how their lives have changed after taking part.

1.45: My Breastfeeding Story – readings from mothers in Bradford/Liverpool

Bradford mothers will be performing written work, completed during writing workshops at Kala Sangam Arts Centre, delivered by Rachel New, a writer and experienced Creative Lives producer.

2.15: In conversation: Bradford Breastfeeding – Lisa Creagh and guest Breastfeeding Lead, Bradford District

In this short conversation Lisa finds out more about the current situation in Bradford – what the initiation rates tell us about the culture of breastfeeding in Bradford and how the Holding Time Project might work alongside these services to bring about cultural change in the city. Questions will be invited from the audience.

The exhibition at Kala Sangam Arts Centre is part of a tour of venues across the North of England, showcasing this project which has been created with mothers from across the UK in Brighton, Coventry and Liverpool. Holding Time is a contemporary exhibition that aims to address and overturn breastfeeding preconceptions and myths, challenge stereotypes, and – above all else – improve breastfeeding rates by harnessing women’s knowledge and wisdom.

Opening Hours: Monday – Friday 9am – 5pm and Saturday 9am – 3pm.
